Wednesday morning, on my way to clinicals, I stopped in to Starbucks for my usual. As I headed to my car, this lady runs behind me saying, "Miss! Miss!" I turn around (thinking I dropped something or forgot something), and she says, "You're really cute and young. Would you be interested in (at this point I'm thinking modeling, but then thinking I'm way too short) being a part of my leadership organization for young women?"
I'm thinking, "What in the world?" and so I'm like, "Okay..."
She goes, "I'm a consultant for Mary Kay and I'm trying to find successful women like you to be a part of our leadership development team." (Inward groan)
Seriously?!
How does she know that I'm successful (or not, for that matter!) based on what I look like! And then I inwardly groaned as I knew what was coming next...the pitch.
So, I quickly said, "You know, I'm in grad school right now and life is really crazy and busy for me, so I'm not the best person for this."
"Oh, no problem, when do you get done?" she asks.
"August," I say.
"Well, give me your info and maybe we can talk later. Do you have a business card?"
(Nurses don't carry around business cards!!)
I was so stunned that I gave her my phone number, expecting her to call in August and she gave me her business card.
Fast forward to Friday afternoon. I'm leaving Children's from my clinicals, and my phone rings. It's my Mary Kay friend. And she wants to meet for coffee so we can talk about the leadership program, (AKA, sell makeup). I decided that it was time to nip this in the bud.
I polietly, but firmly told her that I was not interested. She got offended and wanted to know why I didn't want to be a part of her leadership team for young women (aka, play her game).
I told her that I was not salesmanship material (I would starve if I had to be a saleswoman) and it did not interest me at all, nor did I have the time to commit- and I didn't want to waste her time because I knew that she was busy.
I don't think she liked what I said.
But, I knew that if I didn't I'd be stuck trying to get myself out of something that I didn't want to do... so I just said no.
So sorry, my Mary Kay friend, I don't want to play your game. Plus, I like MAC makeup better! :)

my new bff

The Electrolux Pronto 2-in-1.
A-mazing.
I have had the most difficult time trying to figure out how to keep our wood floors clean. They were always dusty, and it took SO much time to sweep, and then there'd always be a dust line after I swept. We had an I-Robot that did a good job, but it broke like 6 months later.
So, I had a friend at work tell me about this little beauty and I went out to buy one for myself.
FABULOUS!
It picks up all the dust, Bella's fur, etc... It's cordless and it has a detachable Dustbuster if you need it. Only three negatives: 1) doesn't pick up large chunks, 2) doesn't mop, 3) lasts for about 20 minutes off the charger.
So, it's great for quick clean ups before the guests show up.
I highly recommend it!

sleep?!
I worked 7 days straight last week, so last night I was SO excited about being able to sleep hard and sleep in. After I came home from work, Mike and I watched Notting Hill and I was pretty cashed out at the end of the movie. Great beginnings of sleep, right?
No.
I could not fall asleep until midnight. I was ticked! I wanted to get up and take a Benadryl or something to fall asleep but I kept thinking, "Oh just wait, in minutes you'll be asleep," so I didn't.
And then Bella kept being whiney this morning while I was trying to sleep- Mike tried really hard to protect my sleep, but I woke up before I really wanted to.
So, two cups of coffee later, I was a little more awake...
I think I was just too excited about getting so much rest that I had gotten myself so worked up about it and then it didn't happen...bogus.
Maybe this weekend....
No.

dreaming of a vacation
Mike and I decided that we need a vacation... badly.... but, it will have to wait until after I get done AUGUST 2!!
But, where to go?
No idea.
Any suggestions?
And I don't consider Nashville or Birmingham to be vacation spots. Sorry, my Southern friends.

cool shoes
Caution: This might be a lame post. But I looked at the shoes I was wearning tonight and wanted to write about them.

Call me crazy, but I've always thought that Dansko clogs were cute and desperately wanted them to work for me. Seriously, about 3/4 of the staff at Children's wear them and swear by them. I've always loved clogs, I think I should live in the northeast or Colorado or someplace where people eat granola and wear long skirts or something so that I could wear them more often and not look so "nursey".
I've owned 3 different pairs of these shoes but could never seem to make them work. And I was so sad. I REALLY wanted them to work for me. But the soles were just so hard...I need soft soles.
But I kept hearing "try one more pair, try ones with a back."
And I really wanted them to work for me.
So, I found a great deal on E-Bay and got a pair of very gently used black Danskos with a back....and I do love them!
So if you are discouraged with your previous Dansko experience, try ones with a back.

Should I be offended?
I'm in Nashville this week for classes. I woke up this morning, had a cup of coffee before I started my drive to school this morning. I got to Vandy a little early, so I decided that I would stop into Starbucks for a little extra pick-me-up before a long morning of lecture.
I ordered my typical tall-n0n-fat-vanilla-latte, paid for my drink and then waited while the barista made my drink.
As he was making it, he took one look at me and said, "Oh, (with these sad, pitiful eyes) would you like a double shot of espresso?"
"Sure," I said, a little excited about a free shot of espresso.
But then I thought, "Geez, do I really look that bad/tired that he thinks I need a double shot?!"
Thus I changed my Facebook status to "Marisa is perpetually tired."

Mike's last day
Tomorrow is Mike's last day at Raytheon. He's accepted a new job with Cogent, a company owned and run by one of Mike's mentors, who has been wanting Mike to join his company for a while. We have prayerfully considered this job transfer (which has taken a LONG time!!!) and are looking forward to new opportunities in the coming months.
It's a bittersweet move, as Mike was totally fine with his current job. But this offer came up, and it was one that couldn't be bypassed- it's a great opportunity for him to learn a different side of business.
In trying to decide whether or not to change jobs, one of the big factors was that Mike knew he didn't want to be with his current company in 10 years, based on what he saw in those older than he (the amount of travel, hours spent working, etc). Another big selling point was that the job offer Mike received from Cogent has written in that Marc (Mike's new boss) will personally mentor him, which to me is HUGE.
Mike will be working from home, which will be interesting! I hope that Bella the cat is okay with having company during the day. :)
I am so proud of Mike. He has done so well at Raytheon, is respected by his peers and his bosses and is leaving well, gracefully, and on good terms. I am thankful for him, for all of his hard work, and most importantly, for putting our family first as he makes this career move. I am so blessed to have him as my sweet husband.
